I am a single 30-something, and have resided in Southern California all my life. My first yarn craft was crochet. I learned how to crochet as a little girl in the mid-1970s, at the local Recreation Center.
I learned to knit as a teenager in the early 1980s, partially from my mother and partially from a book (I'm afraid I don't remember which one). But neither my mother nor the book succeeded in teaching me how to purl. So I stuck to the garter stitch for my first several projects. Then one day, I made a mistake, and the ridge formed by one row showed up on the wrong side of the piece. Then I realized, "I purled! So that's how you do it!" There was no stopping me after that.
